Gerald Quan, MBBS, PhD, FRACS, FAOrthA

Gerald Quan is an Australian and Fellowship-trained consultant orthopaedic surgeon specializing exclusively in spinal surgery.

Gerald completed his medical training at the University of Melbourne in 1998, before completing his specialist orthopaedic training and gaining Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2007. Subsequently he undertook dedicated Advanced post-Fellowship training in Spinal Surgery in major spine centres throughout the UK, France and Asia Pacific.

Gerald has a strong academic research and teaching background through the University of Melbourne and is committed to the advancement of orthopaedic and spinal research. He obtained a PhD at the University of Melbourne in 2005 in the field of bone and tumour biology. He is Senior National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia Research Fellow and Head of Spinal Research in the University of Melbourne Department of Surgery and head of a basic science laboratory investigating spinal tumours and spinal cord injuries. He has presented widely and published several papers and book chapters on bone and spinal tumours, spinal deformity, spinal fusion, spinal arthroplasty and other spinal pathologies.

He is currently a senior consultant spinal surgeon at Austin Health and the Victorian Spinal Cord Injury Service and is a supervisor of the RACS Spinal Surgery Post-Fellowship Education and Training Programme.

Gerald specializes in surgery for all disorders of the spine from the cervical to lumbosacral regions, particularly in primary and secondary tumours affecting the spine and the management of degenerative conditions and complex deformities.
